geb. 1977 in ostfildern-ruit bei stuttgart, lebt in neckargemünd. nach einer lehre in fotografie sucht er seine zukunft in der portraitfotografie. sein interesse an zeitgenössischer musik führt ihn zur jazzfotografie. live-konzerte bieten ihm gelegenheit die besondere atmosphäre der improvisation in der schwärze des raums einzufangen. es ist schon hier sein bestreben das unaussagbare musikalischer werke in bilder zu fassen.

so ist es nur folgerichtig, dass die edition of contemporary music (ECM) auf jan kricke aufmerksam wird. fortan fokusiert sich kricke auf motive zur covergestaltung von ECM und fühlt sich mehr und mehr dieser ästhetik verpflichtet. zeitgenössische musik führt bei jan kricke keineswegs zur illustration, sondern erregt schwingungen, die sich in ganz eigenständige, assoziative bildfindungen übertragen. reduktion, konzentration und eine geradezu meditative gelassenheit bestimmen seine bildsprache.

»ich möchte das naheliegende erkunden und dabei die weite spüren. meine bilder ergründen die bereiche jenseits des offensichtlichen, dringen in die tiefe und tauchen abstrahiert wieder auf. nach diesem prozess der imaginativen transzendenz gestaltet sich die wirklichkeit überraschend. jenseits der normierten wahrnehmung findet sich das geheimnis.« (jan kricke)

born 1977 in ostfildern-ruit near stuttgart, lives in neckargemünd. after an education in photography, he looks for his future in portrait photography. his interest in contemporary music leads him to take on jazz photography. live-concerts offer him the opportunity to capture the special atmosphere of improvisations in the dark surroundings of a concert hall. it is already here that he attempts to transform the indescribable words of music into his photography.

it is only logical that jan kricke came to the attention of the edition of contemporary music (ECM). since then, kricke focuses on creating motifs for the cover designs of ECM and feels more and more committed to this aesthetic. contemporary music does not lead to a mere illustration, but creates vibrations, which are transferred to completely independent, associative images. reduction, concentration and an almost meditative serenity determine his visual language.

»i would like to explore the nearby and feel the vastness. my pictures explore the areas beyond the obvious, penetrate into the depths and appear again as abstractions. according to this process of imaginative transcendence, the reality is surprising. beyond the normal perception lies the mystery.« (jan kricke)
