MUSICIANS (SELECTION)

my fascination with jazz led me to photography at an early stage. at first, it was the music that drew me in – but soon also those particular moments that unfold between the notes: the concentrated stillness of a soundcheck, a glance, a movement, the light on a stage. photography opened up a direct and personal connection to the world of musicians and to an atmosphere that often reveals itself for only a fleeting moment.

today, i devote myself to jazz photography only occasionally. listening to the music with full concentration has become more important to me than looking through the viewfinder. not every moment needs to be captured in order to remain in memory. at the same time, the conditions surrounding concert photography have changed. increasingly strict guidelines imposed by promoters, concert organisers and music agencies determine how closely photography can still approach what is happening on stage.

for me, however, the music is always at the centre. that is why i no longer feel the need to pick up my camera at every concert. sometimes, it is more important simply to listen and let the moment unfold. and yet jazz photography remains my special entry point into this world. it allows me to approach music in a different way – through light and the human form, through glances and gestures, through the silence between two notes. that is where the image begins.
